Australia 1966 20c Wavy '2' Coin PCGS MS62 (Uncirculated)

Australia 1966 20c Wavy '2' Coin PCGS MS62 (Uncirculated)

Sought after in any condition, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is one of Australia’s rarest and most desirable decimal coin types. Scarce in any grade, this key Variety is virtually never seen in Uncirculated quality, as here.

The transition to decimal currency in 1966 was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in Australia. Such was the magnitude of the task, the Perth Mint and the Melbourne Mint were joined by the newly established Royal Australian Mint to create the new coinage, with Australia also asking for assistance from Britain’s Royal Mint. The Royal Mint struck 5c, 10c & 20c coins, and of the 30 million 1966 20c coins produced in London, it became apparent that a tiny number were distinguished by the obvious upward curve on the top of the baseline in the ‘2’. With the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c naturally issued into circulation, and most suffering extensive wear, this famous Australian Variety is very rare in the upper echelons of quality.

A most impressive coin, the superior example presented here has been graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at MS62 – the equivalent of Uncirculated condition.
