Australia 1966 20c Wavy '2' Coin PCGS MS64 (Choice Uncirculated)

Australia 1966 20c Wavy '2' Coin PCGS MS64 (Choice Uncirculated)

An important, highly sought after Variety, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is one of Australia’s rarest and most desirable decimal coin types. Scarce in any grade, this crucial coin is excessively rare in Choice Uncirculated quality – as presented here.

The changeover to decimal currency was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in Australia. With a huge number of coins required for ‘C-Day’ on the 14th of February 1966, the Australian government utilised the Perth Mint, Melbourne Mint and newly established Royal Australian Mint to strike Australia’s new currency. In addition, the government sought the assistance of Britain’s Royal Mint.

Domiciled in London, the Royal Mint struck 5c, 10c & 20c coins for Australia, and of the 30 million 1966 20c coins it produced, a tiny number showed a significant deviation in design to the standard 20c. Instead of the top of the baseline in the ‘2’ in ‘20’ being flat, it was distinguished by an obvious upward curve! With most 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins suffering extensive circulation, this famous Australian variety is rare in the upper echelons of quality – and excessively rare in the stunning state of preservation seen here!

Undoubtedly among the finest 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins ever offered by Downies, the sparkling example presented here has been graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at MS64 – the equivalent of Choice Uncirculated condition.
