Struck in London exactly 60 years ago, as Great Britain assisted Australia in the lead-up to decimalisation, we are delighted to present the Royal Mint-struck 1966 20c – in Gem Uncirculated condition!
The most momentous landmark in the history of Australian currency, the changeover to decimal currency was an enormous logistical task. Hundreds of millions of new coins were required for distribution on ‘C-Day’ – ‘Currency Day’, February 14, 1966 – to replace the coins that had served the nation so well since our first national currency was introduced in 1910.
Such was the magnitude of the task, the Perth Mint and the Melbourne Mint were joined by Australia’s then new Royal Australian Mint – created specifically to facilitate the production of the nation’s new decimal currency. To guarantee that enough coins were ready to go when the changeover occurred, the Royal Mint in London was also recruited to help.
While the Perth Mint and Melbourne Mint struck copper 1c and 2c coins, the Royal Mint in London struck the cupro-nickel 5c, 10c and 20c coins. All three denominations had ‘mintmarks’ built into the reverse designs, and, in the case of the 20c piece, the identifying mark was the lack of a gap between the last ripple of water and the left-hand side of the platypus’ head.
