Australia 1966 20c Wavy '2' Coin PCGS MS65 (Gem Uncirculated)
Struck at the Royal Mint in London, as Britain assisted Australia in the lead-up to decimalisation, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is one of the rarest decimal coins issued into circulation in Australia. An outstanding opportunity, we have this iconic Variety available in astonishingly rare Gem Uncirculated quality!
Such was the magnitude of the changeover to decimal currency, Australia’s new coins were struck at four mints – the Melbourne Mint, Perth Mint, Royal Australian Mint and Britain’s Royal Mint. While the Perth Mint and Melbourne Mint struck copper 1c and 2c coins, the Royal Mint was recruited to help the Royal Australian Mint strike cupro-nickel 5c, 10c and 20c coins. Thirty million examples of each denomination were struck in London, and among the thirty million 20c coins would ultimately be found the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c type.
Probably caused by a simple and slight variation in the production of some of the dies, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is distinguished by the obvious upward curve on the top of the baseline in the ‘2’. Not only very distinctive, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is extremely scarce, regardless of the grade. Although it is unknown how many coins from the mintage are of this unique Variety, there is no question that the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c has always been tough to find. It is rightly described as a ‘Great Australian Rarity’ when found in the sensational state of preservation seen here.
Undoubtedly one of the finest 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins ever offered by Downies, this example has been graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at MS65 – the equivalent of Gem Uncirculated. To put the quality of this stunning example in context, only THREE 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins have been graded higher by PCGS!
