Australia Perth Mint 1966 1c Coin PCGS MS65RD (Gem Uncirculated Red)

Australia Perth Mint 1966 1c Coin PCGS MS65RD (Gem Uncirculated Red)

Seldom seen in this outstanding state of preservation, we have the Perth Mint-struck 1966 1c piece – in sensational Gem Uncirculated Red condition!

To ensure a smooth transition from predecimal to decimal currency, the Australian Commonwealth Government had to have hundreds of millions of coins struck for the changeover. Thus, four different mints were employed, as the new Royal Australian Mint was joined by the Perth Mint, Melbourne Mint and Royal Mint London in the race to have the required coins ready for C-Day on the 14th of February 1966.

The Perth Mint struck 1c and 2c coins, and in the case of the 1c, did so in incredibly low numbers. As the first issue of a new currency system, the overall mintage of Australia’s 1966 1c coin was a substantial 412.06 million. Of that number, the Perth Mint struck only 26.62 million! That’s a mere 6.46% of the overall mintage! Under these circumstances, and given the passage of exactly 60 years since it was struck, it’s no surprise that the Perth Mint 1966 1c is seldom seen in the quality apparent here.
