US Presidents 2008 $1 James Monroe Gold-plated Coin

Iconic USA Presidential portraits - finished in 24-carat gold!

An official issue of the US Mint’s Presidential dollars, commemorating the great leader who shaped the United States of America. Struck to impeccable quality, these highly sought after US legal tender coins are renowned for the powerful portraits of US Presidents.

James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States and the last President from the Founding Fathers. Monroe was enrolled at the College of William and Mary studying law at the breakout of the American Revolution. In 1776, he joined the Continental Army as an officer under the command of George Washington. After the war, Monroe was tutored in law by Thomas Jefferson. Entering into a prosperous political career, in 1782 he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and from 1783 to 1786 Monroe served in the Continental Congress. Four years later, he ran for a House seat but was beaten by James Madison. He was, however, elected by Virginia Legislature as a State Senator. Soon after he joined the Democratic-Republican faction and within a year became their leader. At the next election, there was little opposition from the declining Federalist Party and Monroe became the fifth president in 1817. During his presidency, Monroe claimed victory in the War of 1812, opened trade relations with Latin American colonies and introduced the Monroe Doctrine – a policy stating America was free from future European colonisation. In 1825, Monroe concluded his presidency.
