Built in the coastal Scottish city of Dundee in 1901, RRS Discovery was the first purpose-built scientific research vessel and the last traditional wooden ship of its kind in the United Kingdom. Its groundbreaking voyages significantly impacted the field of scientific research and revolutionised the world’s understanding of Antarctica in the early twentieth century.
Today, Discovery resides in a custom-built dock in Dundee where the retired ship remains one of the city’s primary visitor attractions. The Royal Mint proudly celebrates this icon of exploration on a UK coin for the first time as it marks both the 125th anniversary of the ship’s
creation and the centenary of the Discovery Oceanographic Expedition.
