19th Century JC/John Taylor Convict Love Token Fair

History you can hold in your hands, we are delighted to present the 19th Century JC/John Taylor Convict Love Token!

Also known as ‘Leaden Hearts’, Convict Love Tokens provide a powerful link with those who fell foul of the harsh British legal system in the 18th & 19th centuries. Made for many British and Irish convicts whilst awaiting transportation to Australia, thousands of miles away from their loved ones, Convict Love Tokens were largely created from English coins. Smoothed flat and inscribed with a special message, illustration or popular phrase of the day, tokens were then left with family, friends or lovers as a keepsake.

Very rare and utterly unique, each Convict Love Token has its own tale to tell – such as the 19th Century JC/John Taylor Convict Love Token before you! Bearing the inscription ‘John Taylor Cabinet Maker York(?)’ on the obverse, with ‘JC Born Aug 28 1836’ on the reverse, this Convict Love Token is made from a smoothed 1797 Cartwheel Penny. Historic, rare and utterly unique, this tangible link to the colonial period is presented in Fair condition.
