Australia Bicentenary 1988 $1 Silver Proof Coin

Australia Bicentenary 1988 $1 Silver Proof Coin

A key issue in the decimal series, the Bicentenary 1988 $1 Silver Proof Coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to mark the 200th anniversary of European settlement.

In 1788, the First Fleet led by Arthur Phillip arrived on Australian shores to establish the first permanent European colony. On January the 26th of that year, Phillip disembarked at Port Jackson (now Sydney) and claimed New South Wales on behalf of Britain and King George III. Two centuries later, Australia marked the Bicentennial of European Settlement in many ways, including the issue of the 1988 Bicentenary $1 Silver Proof.

A unique type, the 1988 Bicentenary $1 Silver Proof was designed by Australia’s numismatic master craftsman Stuart Devlin. Representing an acknowledgment of Australia’s original inhabitants, and the strength of Australia’s modern system of government, the design featured the iconic kangaroo in the style of Indigenous art, set against a stylised portrayal of the nation’s 7-pointed Federation Star. Official Australian legal tender, the obverse carries the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.

An official Australian legal tender issue, struck to the height of Proof quality from sterling silver, this unique, one-year-only type would make a sparkling addition to any collection.
