A work rooted in classical tradition, inspired by medieval legend, the depiction of St George slaying the dragon is arguably the world’s most famous coin design. Created by Royal Mint engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, the design was first seen in 1817, adorning the Gold Sovereigns of King George III, and was employed upon gold coinage struck in Australia from 1871 until 1931. A key element of the Perth Mint’s history, the St George design was the ONLY reverse motif used on gold coinage from the opening of the Mint in 1899 until the last sovereign was struck in 1931. Crafted from 22-carat gold, this Australian legal tender coin therefore maintains a grand tradition.
