Australia 1991 $10 R313L Fraser/Cole MRR Last Prefix with PIL Uncirculated Banknote

Always highly sought after, especially in strictly Uncirculated condition, we are delighted to present the 1991 $10 R313L Fraser/Cole MRR Last Prefix issue – bearing a PLATE IDENTIFICATION LETTER!

Although it is unknown whether it was used as a security device, or to assist quality control, the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) inserted a tiny letter onto the printing plates for virtually every decimal paper note. With the impending release of polymer notes, these Plate Identification Letters (PIL) were phased out by 1990. Some three years later, however, during the last days of the 1991-93 Fraser/Cole $10 print run, one of the printing plates was damaged. Unwittingly or not, those in charge replaced the damaged plate with an old plate featuring a PIL!

As the printing press comprised three plates in a rotating drum, printing three 40-note sheets per revolution, the inclusion of one PIL plate meant that one-third of the notes printed at the end of the last $10 paper run feature a PIL! Thus, for every 120 notes printed during the final period of the Fraser/Cole $10 issue, only 40 carry a PIL!

An essential element of every Australian banknote collection, we have this scarce, fascinating issue available in strictly Uncirculated condition. Click add to cart now!
