Australia International Year of Peace 1986 7-Coin Mint Set

Australia International Year of Peace 1986 7-Coin Mint Set

A vital issue of the Royal Australian Mint’s long-running 1966-2026 Mint Set Series, Downies is delighted to present the 1986 Mint Set!

The Royal Australian Mint employed the 1986 Mint Set to mark a truly significant event, with this keenly anticipated annual issue paying homage to the United Nations International Year of Peace. Declared by the UN General Assembly in October 1985, the International Year of Peace was ardently supported by the Australian Commonwealth Government. To celebrate the event, the Royal Australian Mint was commissioned to strike a commemorative $1 coin.

The design of the 1986 Year of Peace $1 features two hands releasing a dove, surrounded by a wreath – iconic symbols of peace. Not only a poignant, meaningful Australian legal tender issue, the 1986 Year of Peace $1 also represented a key landmark in our currency history. Issued soon after the introduction of the $1 coin, this unique, one-year-only coin was the nation’s very first commemorative $1!

The 1986 Mint Set was not only notable for the presence of Australia’s first $1 commemorative. Importantly, none of the other six coins found in this set were issued for general circulation. Thus, the 1986 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c coins cannot be found in change! With these coins a must-have for anyone seeking to compile a complete collection, and found only in the 1986 Mint Set, this release is naturally one of Australia’s most sought after annual collections.
