With a massive number of coins required for the changeover to decimal currency in 1966, Australia sought the assistance of Britain, and the Royal Mint in London. The Mint struck 30 million examples of each of the 5c, 10c & 20c denominations, and among the 30 million 20c coins would ultimately be found the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c type. Likely to have been caused by a simple and slight variation in the production of some of the dies, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is distinguished by the obvious upward curve on the top of the baseline in the ‘2’. With most 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins suffering extensive circulation, this key Variety is rare in superior grade.
