Australia Royal Mint 1966 10c Coin PCGS MS67 (Gem Uncirculated)
An outstanding opportunity to secure Australia’s very first 10c date in top grade, we have the Royal Mint-struck 1966 10c in magnificent Gem Uncirculated condition!
To ensure a smooth transition from predecimal to decimal currency, the Australian Government required literally hundreds of millions of coins for the changeover. Thus, the Royal Australian Mint – created specifically to strike Australia’s new decimal currency – was joined by the Perth Mint, Melbourne Mint and Royal Mint London in the race to have the required coins ready for the 14th of February 1966.
The Royal Mint, which was at that time striking coins for an array of countries converting to decimal currency, including Britain itself, struck the new Stuart Devlin-designed 5c, 10c and 20c for Australia. All three denominations had identifying ‘mintmarks’ built into the reverse designs, and, in the case of the 10c piece, it was the number of spikes found on the middle feather of the lyrebird, at 12 o’clock on the reverse. The Royal Mint 1966 10c had five spikes, while the Royal Australian Mint 10c had only four.
With six decades having passed since struck, it’s no great shock that the Royal Mint 1966 10c is seldom seen in the state of preservation apparent here. Graded by leading 3rd party independent coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at MS67 – Gem Uncirculated – this ‘first-of-its-kind’ issue is scarce in this quality. Indeed, PCGS has only graded NO examples of the Royal Mint 1966 10c higher than MS67!
A wonderful way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Australian decimal currency, we have just a few of these superb coins in stock. Click add to cart now!
